"The culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves...And you have to be strong enough to say if the culture doesn't work, don't buy it." (42)

This quote hits on one of the themes of this novel: popular culture vs. Self-created values. Morrie thinks we should reject pop-culture values and develop our OWN sense of values/culture. He thinks that media creates a culutre of greed, violence, and lacking satisfaction. In what ways do you agree and/or disagree with Morrie?

  1. I agree with Morrie that media does create a culture of greed, violence and lacking satisfaction. Media creates a culture of greed because if you don’t have the best or most expensive thing you always want more and then you just get greedy and don’t accept what you have in your life. You should be happy for what you have because elsewhere in the world they are lucky just to get food and shelter. In the past few years we have see more and more violence in our world, and example is school shootings. You are suppose to go to school and be able to feel safe but in today’s society shootings are happening more often or so it seems to me and so now school lockdown practices are becoming mandatory at many schools. School use to be a safe place to be and now sometimes in some places it isn’t for various reasons. When it comes to lacking satisfaction we shouldn’t judge ourselves or compare ourselves to the media in our world because we should know what really is important in our own lives. We should represent ourselves and create our own image and maybe someone will like it and want to be like you. When we see celebrities we think they have everything from fame, fortune and perfection but in reality we really don’t see the true side of them. That true side of them that we don’t see is that they are just like a normal person trying to make a living but they have people following them constantly. If you were to ask some celebrities if they could give up their career and never be famous again some may agree. This is because they might wish they had the life we had where paparazzi wasn’t following them constantly and they could go out and do what they wanted without being judged on it. You should be happy that your private life is still private and in that way you can develop your own values for your own life and live by them. Just because media creates some sort of image that they want everyone else to go by doesn’t mean you have to follow it. Create your own look and your own values then see what happens in your life.
